Ruben Amorim delivers harsh critique of Man Utd player after Ipswich draw

Ruben Amorim’s first game as Manchester United manager ended in a 1-1 draw against newly-promoted Ipswich Town. Marcus Rashford’s early goal was canceled out by Omari Hutchinson’s deflected strike at Portman Road.

While United showed flashes of promise under their new boss, their performance fizzled out, exposing areas in need of improvement. Fans were critical of certain players, and Amorim seemed to share their concerns. Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, he responded to Jamie Redknapp’s question about the need for high-intensity running in his system, specifically criticizing veteran defender Jonny Evans.

Amorim highlighted Evans’ lack of pressing on Ipswich’s Omari Hutchinson, who often found space in key areas. Evans, playing as part of a back three alongside Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, was replaced by Luke Shaw in the second half. Amorim explained, “In the first half, number five [Morsy] was often free, and Hutchinson had too much space in dead areas. Jonny Evans should be pressing him, but with only two days of training, it’s hard to get players fully adjusted. Without proper positioning and running, you see the gaps in the data.”

Amorim also emphasized the need for physical improvement to support his high-pressure, high-speed style, acknowledging that it will take time to implement.

His first lineup featured Amad Diallo and Diogo Dalot as wing-backs and Marcus Rashford leading the line ahead of Rasmus Højlund. United, currently 12th in the Premier League, will aim for a better performance in Amorim’s first Old Trafford match on Thursday, hosting Norwegian side Bodø
