Pep Guardiola is reportedly determined to sign two midfielders to address Manchester City’s recent struggles. The team has suffered five consecutive defeats across all competitions—a first since 2006 and an unprecedented low in Guardiola’s managerial career.

Their latest setback was a crushing 4-0 loss to Tottenham at home, exposing defensive vulnerabilities. Despite creating 21 chances, Erling Haaland’s missed opportunities further highlighted City’s inefficiency in front of goal.

Concerns have been raised about the squad’s age profile and underperforming players in key roles. According to the Daily Mail, Guardiola has prioritized strengthening the midfield both for immediate improvement and long-term stability.

One of his targets is Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, a Spanish international who declined a move to Liverpool last summer. Zubimendi, seen as a long-term competitor for Rodri, has a £58 million release clause and a contract running until 2027, though he has yet to sign a renewal. City’s interest could reignite Liverpool’s pursuit, especially as Arne Slot’s team leads the Premier League by eight points.

City is also eyeing Atalanta’s Ederson, a more attack-minded midfielder known for his standout displays in last season’s Europa League against Liverpool. The 25-year-old Brazilian has scored six goals this season and reportedly attracted Manchester United’s interest last summer. However, Atalanta is likely to demand over €50 million for his transfer.
