L’Equipe delivered some of their harshest ratings yet, and even Liverpool’s players weren’t spared despite their victory over Real Madrid.

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé received a harsh 2/10 rating from L’Equipe for his underwhelming performance against Liverpool, while Mohamed Salah was also controversially rated low.

Arne Slot’s side advanced to the Champions League knockout stages on Wednesday, with goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo securing a straightforward 2-0 win over an uninspired Real Madrid.

Madrid, meanwhile, dropped to 24th in the league table with just two wins from five matches. For the first time in their history, the Spanish giants have suffered three defeats in the Champions League group stage, leading to L’Equipe delivering its notoriously critical player ratings.

Three Real Madrid players—Kylian Mbappé, Arda Güler, and Ferland Mendy—were given 2/10 ratings. Luka Modric, Jude Bellingham, and Brahim Díaz fared slightly better with 3/10, while Raúl Asencio, Federico Valverde, and Antonio Rüdiger received 5/10. The standout performers for Madrid, according to L’Equipe, were Thibaut Courtois and Eduardo Camavinga, both earning 7/10.

Liverpool’s players generally received higher ratings, though Mohamed Salah, Darwin Núñez, Ryan Gravenberch, Andy Robertson, and Curtis Jones were each rated 5/10. The best-rated Liverpool players were Conor Bradley and Caoimhin Kelleher, both scoring 7/10.

Following the game, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti addressed Mbappé’s struggles:

“It’s common for forwards to go through tough spells when it comes to scoring,” he said. “The solution is patience. It’s a difficult moment for him, especially after missing the penalty. He might lack a bit of confidence, but when things aren’t working, the key is to keep it simple. He’s an extraordinary player, and we must support him and stay patient.”
