Ruben Amorim has already chosen the defender he wants to target in a £50m deal this January, ahead of discussions with Manchester United’s leadership.

Ruben Amorim is reportedly preparing to make his first signing as Manchester United head coach, though it won’t come cheap.

The 39-year-old showcased his tactical intentions during Sunday’s Premier League clash against Ipswich Town, fielding a 3-4-3 formation. Jonny Evans joined Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui in a back three, with Diogo Dalot and Amad Diallo operating as wing-backs.

Despite having defensive options like Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, and Victor Lindelof returning to fitness soon, Amorim is eager to strengthen his backline further. According to The Sun, he is eyeing a £50 million move for Benfica’s Tomas Araujo in January.

The 22-year-old has been in impressive form this season alongside Nicolas Otamendi and is attracting attention from several top European clubs, including Newcastle United. Amorim has reportedly added Araujo to his priority list as part of his rebuild and plans to discuss the transfer with United officials on Friday.

Araujo is highly rated for his ability to play in a high line, his composure on the ball, and his speed. Having made 12 appearances for Benfica this season, he is considered one of Portugal’s brightest young defensive talents. Although his release clause stands at £84 million, reports from O Jogo suggest that Benfica would only entertain an “irrefutable” offer in January.

While Newcastle has also shown interest, Benfica doubts their willingness to meet the asking price.
