Mikel Arteta advised against signing Viktor Gyokeres as Arsenal faces renewed transfer challenges.

Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn has shared his thoughts on the upcoming January transfer window, offering a prediction that might disappoint Gunners fans.

With Arsenal battling Liverpool and Manchester City for the Premier League title, many believe signing a high-profile forward could be the key to securing the crown. The Gunners have been linked with several players, including Viktor Gyokeres, who is also a target for Manchester United.

However, Winterburn, a three-time league winner with Arsenal, remains confident that his former team can win the title without adding a new striker. He said, “I’m a bit more reserved than some people. They were one of the top goalscorers in the Premier League last season. So that says to you, why do you need a striker? When we don’t score, we think we need a striker. But in the last two games, we’ve got eight goals, which suggests that if we play as well as we can in the right situations, everything is fine. I think this debate will rage all season.”

Despite this, Winterburn is skeptical about Arsenal making any significant moves in January. He believes Mikel Arteta may want reinforcements but warns the window might not deliver the results fans hope for. He explained, “If you’re looking at big players, they’re usually in Champions League teams, so it’s hard to get them. They might bring someone in, but I think Arteta will be happy with his squad. They’ll always look to improve, but whether that’s possible in January, I have my doubts. I hope I’m wrong.”

Winterburn also acknowledged that the current squad would welcome new additions—provided they don’t threaten their positions. He said, “Players will be delighted if a new signing comes in, as long as it’s not in their position. There’s respect for the manager and club knowing that a new player is there to strengthen the squad. If someone out there can improve the team, I’m sure the club and manager will do everything possible. But I’m always a bit nervous about January and think major moves are more likely in the summer.”
