Mikel Arteta stated that Arsenal had ‘no alternative’ ahead of their clash with Manchester United.

Former Arsenal captain William Gallas has stressed the importance of the match, warning that the Gunners cannot afford any slip-ups if they hope to end their title drought this season.

Currently nine points behind Liverpool, Arsenal has already suffered two defeats in their first 13 league matches. In contrast, they lost just once in their first 15 games last season and only one of their opening 21 the year before.

Manchester United, the only team to defeat Arsenal in the first half of the 2022-23 season, is now under new management with Ruben Amorim, who remains unbeaten in his first three matches. Despite beating United twice last season, including a dramatic stoppage-time victory at the Emirates, Arsenal faces a must-win situation.

Gallas emphasized the need to capitalize on any Liverpool slip-ups, stating, “If Liverpool draws twice and Arsenal wins twice, the nine-point gap becomes five. Everything changes quickly in the Premier League. Arsenal must stay close to Liverpool, and against Man United, they have no choice but to win.”

He also highlighted the importance of consistency, urging Arsenal to follow up a potential United victory with another win against Fulham on Sunday. “Arsenal performs well in big games, but they need to stop dropping points against smaller teams,” Gallas added.

Wednesday’s clash marks the first of two Arsenal-United encounters within weeks, as they are also set to meet in the FA Cup third round.
