“Paul Merson Predicts Premier League Title Race Is Over After City Slip Up Against Palace”

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has ruled Manchester City out of the Premier League title race after their 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola’s side now trail leaders Liverpool by eight points, having played one more game. When asked if City still have a shot at the title, Merson responded:

“Yes, I’d say they’re out of it. Watching City over the years, they dominate games and create plenty of chances, but when they don’t win, it’s often down to the opposition goalkeeper having a standout performance. They regularly have 30 shots in a game, but this season, I don’t see them going on a 12-match winning streak. Too many players are underperforming, and I just don’t see it happening.”

Defensive and Attacking Concerns

City’s struggles at both ends of the pitch have hindered their campaign. Defensively, they’ve failed to keep back-to-back clean sheets in the league and rank ninth for expected goals conceded (xG). A defence leaking so many chances and goals isn’t title-winning material.

In attack, Erling Haaland remains the only consistent contributor, while Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol, tied with three goals each, are their second-highest scorers—a damning statistic for the reigning champions.

Bookmakers have lengthened City’s odds to as high as 9/1 to win the league, placing them on par with Chelsea in some markets. Liverpool are the favorites, with Arsenal close behind at odds ranging from 15/8 to 2/1.
