Manchester United have reportedly initiated discussions for their first signing under Ruben Amorim, aiming to address a longstanding problem area in the squad.

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing the signing of a highly-rated South American talent, according to recent reports.

Ruben Amorim, United’s 39-year-old head coach, has yet to make any signings since joining the club in November, following Erik ten Hag’s departure. Since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS group acquired a £1.25 billion minority stake in February 2024, the Red Devils have made several significant additions to their squad, including Leny Yoro (£52m), Manuel Ugarte (£51m), Matthijs de Ligt (£45m), Joshua Zirkzee (£36m), and Noussair Mazraoui (£15m), totaling £177m in spending during the summer transfer window.

A notable shift in recruitment strategy has been evident, as all new arrivals were 26 years old or younger at the time of signing. This focus on youth may continue, with journalist Pedro Torres reporting United’s interest in 17-year-old Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon, who plays for Cerro Porteño and has made 19 appearances this season.

The left-back position has been a concern for United, especially with Luke Shaw sidelined due to injury, leaving Diogo Dalot to fill in as Ruben Amorim’s preferred choice. Reports from journalist César Luis Merlo suggest advanced talks are underway, with an agreed transfer fee of £3.1 million for Leon, who was also previously linked to Arsenal. If the move materializes, Leon would likely play a supporting role initially due to his age.

As the January transfer window approaches, it remains unclear how active United will be. They have also been linked with Sporting forward Viktor Gyökeres as Amorim looks to strengthen his squad. Despite an encouraging start under Amorim, United suffered defeats to Arsenal and Nottingham Forest last week, leaving them in 13th place in the Premier League.

Following the 3-2 loss to Forest, Amorim emphasized the need for patience, stating:

“We knew this would be a long journey, but we want to win because this is a massive club, and you feel it. When you lose, it’s hard for everyone, and I understand that. We must remain consistent and stick to our

approach.”
