Liverpool faces a straightforward decision following Manchester United’s £58m transfer move.

Liverpool may be reluctant to offer a large contract to 33-year-old Virgil van Dijk, but failing to improve his deal could turn into a costly risk. Van Dijk, nominated for Fans’ Footballer of the Year, remains one of the best centre-backs in the world and is one of three key Liverpool players, alongside Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contracts expire in the summer. Although van Dijk is 33, and the club’s hierarchy may hesitate to extend a lucrative deal to an aging player, he has shown no signs of decline. In fact, his form has improved in the last 18 months after recovering from a significant knee injury.

While it may seem prudent to avoid paying high wages to a player over 30, the cost of replacing van Dijk could be far more expensive. A potential replacement would likely cost around £75m, the same price Liverpool paid for van Dijk in 2018. Though players like Antonio Rudiger and Ruben Dias have been similarly effective, they are unlikely to be attainable. Liverpool has also been linked with cheaper alternatives, such as Gleison Bremer, Goncalo Inacio, Loic Bade, and Marc Guehi, whose fees range from £45m to £75m. However, none are at the same level as van Dijk.

The scarcity of top-tier centre-backs in the current market, highlighted by Manchester United’s £58.9m purchase of teenager Leny Yoro, suggests that keeping van Dijk might be the more sensible choice. Extending his contract appears to be the best option, especially considering he is arguably the most crucial player for Liverpool to renew, compared to Salah or Alexander-Arnold. While Salah’s form has been exceptional and Alexander-Arnold has a potential replacement in Conor Bradley, losing van Dijk could be far more damaging.
