Mikel Arteta provides encouraging update on Gabriel’s injury and hints at a potential replacement signing.

Mikel Arteta has shared promising news that Gabriel is nearing a return to action. The Brazilian defender has been sidelined for the past three games across all competitions due to a hamstring injury sustained during last month’s Champions League victory over Sporting, which he aggravated in the subsequent match against West Ham.

In Gabriel’s absence, Jakub Kiwior has formed a central defensive partnership with William Saliba. While Arsenal have coped well overall, they did drop points in a draw against Fulham on Sunday. The Gunners now prepare to host Everton on Saturday, following a commanding midweek victory over Monaco. Arteta confirmed that Gabriel trained on Friday and is expected to be available for selection.

“There is a possibility for one of them to be available. He trained today. It’s Gabriel,” Arteta stated. Reflecting on Everton, he added, “The club has gone through many different phases, but I admire how they unite to face challenges. We’ll have to be at our best to beat them.”

While Gabriel’s return is imminent, Arteta expressed less optimism regarding Riccardo Calafiori, who remains sidelined with a knee injury. The summer signing has missed the last three matches and has struggled with fitness issues throughout the season, tallying 14 absences for both club and country. Gabriel, meanwhile, has missed five games due to injuries this campaign. Arsenal’s defensive options have been stretched thin, even requiring 18-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly to step in midweek.

Despite these challenges, Arteta downplayed the likelihood of significant activity in the January transfer window, suggesting the club is focused on recovering its injured players. However, he hinted at potential surprises.
