Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed confidence that Ruben Amorim will succeed at Manchester United, echoing similar praise he gave Erik ten Hag two years ago.

Amorim, 39, previously defeated Guardiola earlier this season while managing Sporting Lisbon, before taking over at United in November following Ten Hag’s dismissal. Since joining, Amorim has overseen six matches, winning three, losing two, and drawing one. On Sunday, he will face Guardiola again in a derby clash at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola praised Amorim’s early impact at United, stating: “He will do a good job at Man United, for sure. His influence is already there. All the patterns are beginning to show—movements, runners, and pace.” This sentiment mirrors his comments about Ten Hag in 2022, when he predicted United were “coming back” under the Dutchman’s leadership.

Guardiola, however, will be focused on City’s recent struggles, having won only one of their last 10 matches across all competitions. Their latest setback, a 2-0 Champions League loss to Juventus, followed a disappointing 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace, leaving City fourth in the Premier League and eight points behind leaders Liverpool. Meanwhile, United, currently in 13th place after a poor start to the season, are searching for consistency under Amorim.

Amorim remains cautious ahead of the derby, acknowledging City’s ability to bounce back. “Great teams can respond at any moment,” he said. “They are in a better place than us in terms of understanding the game, confidence, and their style of play. We need to focus on our strategy and our team.”
