Alan Shearer offers a theory on Darwin Nunez as scrutiny intensifies around the struggling Liverpool star.

Alan Shearer believes Darwin Nunez could get a second chance under Arne Slot due to Liverpool’s strong performance this season. The Reds currently lead both the Premier League and Champions League under Slot, who has made an impressive start since replacing Jurgen Klopp in the summer.

While stars like Mohamed Salah have been in exceptional form, Nunez has struggled, scoring just three goals in 19 appearances. His inconsistent performances have sparked speculation that Slot might offload the Uruguayan if he reshapes the squad in the future. However, Shearer advises against making hasty decisions, given Liverpool’s overall success.

“They’re not doing too bad, are they? They’ve got so many options in that position, and it’s working perfectly for them right now,” Shearer, speaking as a Betfair ambassador, commented. “Nunez might miss chances and frustrate at times, but Liverpool are top of the Champions League and the Premier League. That’s the bigger picture, so you can’t be overly critical of individuals. Slot has things running smoothly, and there’s no reason to pick faults at the moment.”

Slot has added only two players to Liverpool’s squad since his arrival—Federico Chiesa from Juventus and Giorgi Mamardashvili, set to join from Valencia next year. When asked if Liverpool’s strong form makes it harder for Slot to leave his mark on the squad, Shearer praised the Dutchman’s management.

“They’ve been nearly perfect this season, so I’m not going to suggest what he should or shouldn’t do,” Shearer said. “Slot is doing a great job, and Liverpool’s squad depth is incredible. Even with injuries, like Ibrahima Konaté being replaced by Joe Gomez, they’ve maintained their quality. Whether it’s in defense, midfield, or even with Caoimhin Kelleher stepping in for Alisson, they’ve been strong all over the pitch.”

Shearer also highlighted the team’s ability to win games without always playing their best football. “They might have another gear or two, but even when they’re not at their best, they find a way to win. That’s a great habit to have,” he added.
