Liverpool ‘prepared to intercept’ Premier League rival’s plans for an impressive January signing.

Liverpool remain firmly in control at the top of the Premier League despite recent points dropped against Fulham. However, manager Arne Slot and the club’s hierarchy are keen to bolster their squad during the January transfer window to maintain their edge as rivals strengthen.

Slot, who has replaced Jurgen Klopp with great success so far, is determined not to rest on his laurels. With other Premier League clubs actively seeking reinforcements, Liverpool are reportedly gearing up for a high-profile battle in January to secure the services of Johan Bakayoko, a 21-year-old Belgian forward impressing in the Eredivisie.

According to Caught Offside, Bakayoko, who developed at Mechelen and Anderlecht before joining PSV in 2019, has drawn significant interest for his performances as a right winger. Having established himself in PSV’s first team, he has long been a target for Newcastle United. However, with PSV likely to demand a fee of £50 million and Newcastle mindful of staying within Premier League financial regulations, Liverpool could swoop in to bring Bakayoko to Anfield.

Since making his senior debut in February 2022, Bakayoko has made over 100 appearances for PSV, scoring 27 goals and providing 22 assists. This season, he is averaging a goal every other game in the Eredivisie, and his all-around playmaking ability has noticeably improved in the 2024-25 campaign.

Liverpool’s interest partly stems from lingering uncertainty over Mohamed Salah’s future. At just 21, Bakayoko represents a long-term solution, regardless of Salah’s situation, and is seen as a potential successor for the Egyptian. Bakayoko’s current contract with PSV runs until June 2026.

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s reliance on Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes on the left contrasts with limited options on the right. Jacob Murphy, 29, has been the standout choice ahead of Miguel Almirón, but the need for younger talent in this area is pressing. With Bakayoko fitting the profile, Newcastle remain interested, but Liverpool’s readiness to act decisively could tip the scales in the
