Mykhailo Mudryk addresses positive drug test in official statement as Chelsea player faces suspension.

Mykhailo Mudryk has addressed reports of a positive drugs test following his provisional suspension from football.

On Tuesday, it was revealed that the Football Association (FA) had informed Mudryk of an adverse analytical finding, leading to his temporary suspension. According to the Daily Mail, the issue is believed to involve a contaminated supplement, reportedly only available overseas.

Reacting to the news, Mudryk denied any wrongdoing and shared that his team is investigating the matter. In a statement posted on Instagram, he said:

“I can confirm that I have been notified that a sample I provided to The FA contained a banned substance. This has come as a complete shock, as I have never knowingly used any banned substances or broken any rules. I am working closely with my team to investigate how this could have happened. I know I have done nothing wrong and remain hopeful of returning to the pitch soon. Due to the confidentiality of the process, I cannot comment further but will provide updates when I can.”

Reports indicate Mudryk underwent a routine urine test in August, which came back clear. He is now awaiting the results of a ‘B’ sample to confirm or refute the findings from the initial test. Under FA rules, a provisional suspension is implemented following a positive test, but players are allowed to provide an explanation before any formal charges or penalties are determined.

Mudryk, an £89 million signing from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023, last played for Chelsea in a Europa Conference League match against Heidenheim on November 28. His absence was initially attributed to illness, as stated by Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea also released an official statement in support of Mudryk, saying:

“Chelsea Football Club can confirm the Football Association recently contacted our player Mykhailo Mudryk concerning an adverse finding in a routine urine test.

“Both the Club and Mykhailo fully support The FA’s testing programme, and all our players, including Mykhailo, are regularly tested.

“Mykhailo has categorically stated that he has never knowingly used any banned substances. The Club and Mykhailo will work with the relevant authorities to determine the cause of the adverse finding.

“The Club will not be commenting any further.”
