Scott McTominay shares his thoughts on leaving Manchester United for Napoli as Italian media assign him a new nickname.

Scott McTominay has reflected on his departure from Manchester United to join Napoli last summer, marking the first transfer of his career.

The 28-year-old midfielder, who rose through United’s youth system, scored 29 goals in 255 appearances across all competitions. Debuting under Jose Mourinho, McTominay also played for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick, and Erik ten Hag, winning the FA Cup and League Cup with his boyhood club.

However, McTominay’s time at Old Trafford ended in the summer when he moved to Serie A side Napoli for a reported £25.7 million. As an academy graduate, his transfer fee counted as pure profit for United under Premier League Profit and Sustainability rules. His departure paved the way for Manuel Ugarte, who joined United from PSG for a reported £42 million.

At Napoli, McTominay has adapted well, scoring four goals in 15 appearances across all competitions. Italian media have dubbed him the “new Napoli leader,” while fans have affectionately nicknamed him “McMaradona” in tribute to the legendary Diego Maradona, who played for Napoli from 1984 to 1991.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, McTominay admitted leaving United was a tough decision but ultimately necessary for his career. He explained, “It was a mutual decision. An opportunity came up, and I had to decide. FFP challenges for homegrown players didn’t influence me—it was about the fans, the coach, and what I could achieve here.

“On my last day, it was hard to say goodbye to everyone. But that’s football. I had to prioritize my career and follow my instincts. I love United—they were my life for 22 years—but I’ve moved on and am thoroughly enjoying myself here.”
