Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes’ performance against Bournemouth has drawn criticism for all the wrong reasons.
On Sunday afternoon, United hosted Andoni Iraola’s in-form Bournemouth side at Old Trafford, aiming to build on their previous victory over Manchester City.
However, Bournemouth dominated from start to finish, with goals from Dean Huijsen, Justin Kluivert, and Antoine Semenyo securing a commanding 3-0 win for the visitors. It marked a difficult day for Ruben Amorim, who suffered his heaviest defeat since taking over from Erik ten Hag.
After the match, a compilation highlighting Fernandes’ struggles went viral. The Portuguese midfielder missed three clear chances to score and repeatedly misplaced his passes and crosses, an uncharacteristic display from the United skipper.
Fans took to social media to share their reactions. One wrote, “Too many missed chances. His performance today wasn’t really good.” Another commented, “Missed a lot of chances. We could’ve gotten at least 3 goals from him.” A third added, “Absolute rubbish, that’s what he displayed today,” while another described his performance as “very poor.”
However, some fans defended the 30-year-old. One said, “He’s not useless, just wasn’t at his best today.”
The loss leaves Manchester United in 13th place in the Premier League, 17 points behind league leaders Liverpool. For the first time in Premier League history, United will spend Christmas in the bottom half of the table.
Speaking after the match, Amorim said:
“It’s so much easier to pass on an idea when you’re winning, scoring, and not conceding. But it’s also a great privilege to be here, so we have to continue. Nothing bad lasts forever, and nothing good lasts forever. We must stay strong in our ideas, especially during tough times. We will regroup and try to win the next game.”
