Liverpool could face an unexpected setback that might derail their season.
Arne Slot has made an impressive start as Liverpool manager, with the team excelling on all fronts under his leadership. The Reds currently top both the Premier League and Champions League standings, with Slot benefiting from the support of fellow Dutchman John Heitinga, who joined as an assistant coach during the summer.
Heitinga, a former Everton player, left West Ham after the 2023/24 season to work alongside Slot at Liverpool. However, his tenure at Anfield could be cut short, as Football Insider reports he is a leading candidate to become the new West Brom manager following Carlos Corberan’s move to Valencia.
West Brom, sitting seventh in the Championship and aiming for promotion, are reportedly drawn to Heitinga’s Premier League experience and progressive coaching style. Since joining Liverpool, Heitinga has earned widespread recognition, with Slot praising him as an outstanding coach. Slot even criticized Ajax for not appointing Heitinga as their head coach, stating, “Liverpool is now benefitting from what Ajax failed to see.”
Should Heitinga leave Liverpool mid-season, it would represent a major blow to Slot and the club, given the significant impact he has had since his arrival.
