Martin Odegaard has fulfilled Cristiano Ronaldo’s prediction about the Arsenal star.
Cristiano Ronaldo predicted Martin Odegaard would become a world-class player when they shared the pitch at Real Madrid, a forecast that has come true at Arsenal.
The 26-year-old Norwegian first emerged through the Stromsgodset youth system in 2013 before Real Madrid shocked the football world by signing the then 16-year-old in 2015. This move made Odegaard the youngest player to ever feature for the club’s first team. However, during his time in Madrid, Odegaard struggled for opportunities in the senior squad, managing just 11 appearances while spending most of his tenure with the Castilla reserves under Zinedine Zidane.
Blocked by established stars like Toni Kroos and Luka Modric, Odegaard was unable to secure a regular spot in the La Liga side. Instead, he was loaned out to Heerenveen, Vitesse, Real Sociedad, and Arsenal to develop his skills. Despite limited game time at Madrid, Ronaldo recognized Odegaard’s potential early on. In a 2015 interview with BT Sport, Ronaldo described the young midfielder as “a very good player” with “a good future ahead.” He praised Odegaard’s left foot and emphasized the importance of giving him time to grow and make the right decisions.
Odegaard’s turning point came in 2021 when he made a permanent move to Arsenal for a reported £30 million after impressing during a loan spell under Mikel Arteta. It didn’t take long for him to fulfill Ronaldo’s prediction. In his first full season with Arsenal, he featured in 36 matches, scoring seven goals and providing four assists, helping the Gunners secure a fifth-place Premier League finish. His second season saw him appointed club captain in 2022 and leading Arsenal to a second-place finish, just five points behind Manchester City.
The 2023/24 season was even closer, with Arsenal narrowly missing the Premier League title by two points to City. Odegaard played a key role, contributing eight goals and 10 assists in 35 appearances. His outstanding performances earned him Arsenal’s Player of the Season award for the second consecutive year, alongside accolades like a spot in the PFA Team of the Year for two seasons in a row. He also helped Arsenal lift the Community Shield in 2023, despite competing alongside talents like Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, and Leandro Trossard.
Arteta has been vocal about Odegaard’s importance to the team, emphasizing his impact on the squad both as a captain and as a player. In an interview with Sky Sports, Arteta praised Odegaard’s influence, saying, “He has a big role in our team, that’s why he’s the captain. When he’s on the pitch and performing at that level, he elevates everyone’s game to a different universe.”
Odegaard’s rise at Arsenal has truly validated Ronaldo’s early prediction, cementing his status as one of the Premier League’s fine
st players.
