Ruben Amorim hits back at reporter after puzzling question following Man Utd’s loss to Wolves

Ruben Amorim responded sharply to a journalist after his record at Manchester United came under scrutiny following their 2-0 loss to Wolves on Boxing Day.

The defeat at Molineux marked another disappointing result for United, compounded by the dismissal of captain Bruno Fernandes. Under Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag last month, the Red Devils have won only four of their first 10 games and now sit 14th in the Premier League, a mere eight points above the relegation zone.

In contrast, Wolves have enjoyed a resurgence under new coach Vitor Pereira, who replaced Gary O’Neil earlier this month. Pereira has overseen two wins in his first two games, lifting the team out of the bottom three.

During the post-match press conference, a journalist questioned Amorim’s progress by comparing his record to Pereira’s, asking: “I know you said you don’t know how long it will take, but Wolves have just had a new manager in for a week with a new system. With your players, what do you think is missing?”

Amorim retorted: “New system? Wolves are playing a new system? They play the same system. Vitor Pereira worked with the same system in Saudi Arabia. This squad was built for that system. But don’t worry—I’m saying we have a lot to improve. We need to win games and sell the idea to the players. If not, this is really hard, but Wolves are in a completely different situation.”

United defender Harry Maguire backed Amorim and acknowledged the difficulties in adapting to his methods during a hectic festive schedule. Speaking to MUTV, Maguire said: “It’s tough for the manager because his style is the opposite of the previous one. They want to work on the training pitch to improve defending and set plays, but the busy schedule makes it hard. Still, we can’t use that as an excuse. This club demands winning, and we’re not delivering.”
