John Arne Riise, who joined Liverpool from Monaco in 2001, played 348 matches, scored 31 goals, and won the Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup during his seven years at Anfield before moving to Roma in 2008. However, shortly before his departure, his payslip was circulated on Liverpool, Manchester United, and Arsenal websites. The leaked document revealed not only his salary details but also sensitive information, such as his address and national insurance number.

Photos of the payslip showed it marked “Private and Confidential,” with details including monthly pay, tax code, and National Insurance contributions. According to a report by The Daily Mail 17 years ago, a source close to Riise believed the document had been stolen, expressing concerns about the sensitive information being widely available online.

The source stated, “We are convinced someone has stolen this. John Arne Riise is not the sort of person who throws a wageslip in the rubbish bin. There’s a lot of delicate information about John now circulating online, and there’s a real worry that his national insurance number could be misused by fraudsters.”

The leaked slip, dated April 2007, detailed his September 2006 earnings, which totaled £139,634. Riise’s gross pay included £82,000 after tax, a £250 points bonus, £4,000 in appearance fees, and a Champions League payment of £15,384.62. His deductions for the year included £304,137.66 in taxes, £1611.67 in National Insurance, £65 for meals, and £36 for tickets.

At the time, a Liverpool spokesperson stated, “We are taking the matter extremely seriously and are investigating.” A police spokesperson added, “As far as we are aware, no complaints have been made

so far.”
