Leaked Liverpool pay slips reveal the significant value of Mohamed Salah and other players.

A Liverpool legend once shared a historic payslip on social media, highlighting the stark contrast between wages in past decades and modern football salaries.

Liverpool has hosted some of the world’s top football talents over the years, including Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso, Mohamed Salah, Luis Suarez, and Fernando Torres. Today, many elite players earn over £300,000 per week, a far cry from the modest wages of footballers in the early days of the sport.

Legendary Liverpool striker John Aldridge recently posted a squad payslip from August 1960 on X (formerly Twitter), offering a glimpse into the financial realities of that era. At the time, Liverpool was still in the Second Division and wouldn’t return to the top flight until 1962 under Bill Shankly.

The payslip revealed that prominent players such as 1966 World Cup winner Roger Hunt and Ian Callaghan earned £23 per week, equivalent to about £663 today. Players could also earn a £4 bonus (approximately £115 today) for outstanding performances. Meanwhile, coach Bob Paisley, who later became one of Liverpool’s greatest managers, earned £17 a week (about £490 today), and his successor Joe Fagan received £16 (£461).

To match Mohamed Salah’s reported weekly wage of £350,000, a player in 1960 would have needed to earn approximately £12,150 per week, excluding bonuses. The comparison underscores how drastically football’s financial landscape has evolved over the years.
