The Arsenal vs Brentford match is the sole Premier League game scheduled for New Year’s Day.
While 18 of the 20 Premier League teams are set to play on Sunday or Monday, Arsenal’s match against Brentford is scheduled for Wednesday, making it the only top-flight game on New Year’s Day. The Gunners aim to reduce the gap to six points behind league leaders Liverpool, who recently secured a commanding 5-0 win over West Ham.
Unlike previous seasons, where Arsenal played on December 31—such as their trips to Fulham in 2023 and Brighton in 2022—this year’s schedule has raised questions among fans due to its unusual setup. An explanation for the change has now been provided.
Why Arsenal vs. Brentford Is on Wednesday
The Premier League has opted not to schedule games on December 28, 31, or January 2 and 3 this season. Additionally, the league implemented a rule to ensure no team plays two matches within 60 hours during the festive period, spanning December 21 to January 5. Arsenal’s Friday, December 27 match made a December 29 fixture impossible, as it would have breached the 60-hour rule. Similarly, a game on January 2 was unfeasible due to Arsenal’s clash with Brighton on January 4.
While Arsenal could have played on December 30, broadcasters prioritized airing Manchester United’s match against Newcastle United that evening. To accommodate TV scheduling while ensuring Arsenal’s game was televised, the fixture was pushed to Wednesday, the next available slot. However, this leaves Arsenal with minimal recovery time ahead of their weekend game, adding to the challenges of the packed winter sc
hedule.
