Liverpool is prepared to approve their first departure of the January transfer window, with discussions underway regarding a move for an overlooked player.

Liverpool could see a forgotten player depart in the January transfer window, as Arne Slot looks to revamp his squad for the second half of the Premier League season.

Since replacing Jurgen Klopp after the 2023/24 campaign, Slot, 46, has had a transformative impact on Liverpool. The Reds currently lead the Premier League, dominate the 36-team Champions League group stage, and have secured a spot in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

However, Slot faced challenges in the summer transfer market. Liverpool failed to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, though Ryan Gravenberch has since excelled in the defensive midfield role. Federico Chiesa was their sole summer signing, but he has struggled to impress in just four appearances for the team.

While Liverpool finalized a £29 million deal for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, he won’t join the squad until the 2025/26 season. Next summer, he will bolster an already strong goalkeeping lineup featuring Alisson, Caoimhín Kelleher, and Vitezslav Jaros. In the meantime, another goalkeeper may leave the club this month.

Brazilian shot-stopper Marcelo Pitaluga, currently on loan at Scottish Championship side Livingston, could cut his spell short after making only two appearances this season, according to Liverpool.com. Pitaluga, 22, previously spent time on loan at Macclesfield and St Patrick’s Athletic. However, with Liverpool’s depth in goal, his chances of breaking into the first team seem slim.

Reports from Brazil’s UOL indicate that talks are underway for Pitaluga to return to his former club, Fluminense, with a move potentially happening during the January window. Despite extending his Liverpool contract in January 2024 and being valued at £166,000 by Transfermarkt, a fresh start might be on the horizon.

Reflecting on his loan experiences in November 2024, Pitaluga told Liverpool.com:

“Football changes quickly, and you never know when you’ll be needed. Vite [Jaros] is a great example. When Ali [Alisson] was injured and Caoimhín was ill, he stepped in. That’s what loans prepare you for.”

His comments referenced Jaros, who unexpectedly stepped in for Alisson after an injury during a Premier League match against Crystal Palace in October. Pitaluga added:

“Loans build your confidence and experience, so you’re ready for anything, no matter whe
