David Ornstein has shared a worrying update about Kobbie Mainoo that no Manchester United supporter was anticipating.
Manchester United fans are likely to be concerned by David Ornstein’s latest update regarding Kobbie Mainoo’s future.
Mainoo, 19, delivered one of his best performances of the season alongside Manuel Ugarte in United’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. However, this season he hasn’t quite reached the heights he achieved during his breakthrough year under Erik ten Hag in 2023/24.
During his debut season, the Stockport-born midfielder won fans over with several memorable moments, including a stunning goal in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool in April 2024 and a match-winning performance against Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May.
Despite a drop in form, coupled with an ankle injury that sidelined him until late October, Mainoo is still seen as one of the brightest young talents in football.
Manchester United has a long-standing tradition of promoting academy graduates to the first team, with at least one homegrown player included in every matchday squad since 1937. However, in recent years, several academy players have been sold, with the sale of such players being seen as “pure profit” from a financial perspective.
Scott McTominay and Mason Greenwood have left the club recently, and Marcus Rashford has also been linked with a potential move. Ornstein shared a concerning update on Mainoo’s situation:
“If a departure is going to happen [for Rashford], perhaps it’s more likely in the summer, but it would represent pure profit, something we hear about so much because he was an academy graduate,” Ornstein explained on NBC.
“In the same way that Kobbie Mainoo might be, he’s out of contract in 2027 – no news on a new deal. Alejandro Garnacho too. I don’t think anybody in that bracket is off the table. Who is, are players like Leny Yoro and Amad Diallo – I think they’re untouchable.
“In terms of Amorim, Manchester United’s hierarchy fully supports him and backs him to lead the club’s t
ransformation.”
