Virgil van Dijk’s representatives have reportedly “proposed” him to a top club amid growing uncertainty surrounding his contract with Liverpool.
Virgil van Dijk’s agent reportedly offered him to a major European club, but the proposal was turned down, according to shocking reports.
Van Dijk has been at the center of transfer rumors with his Liverpool contract set to expire at the end of the season. Talks over a new deal are ongoing, with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold in similar situations.
As his contract enters its final six months, Van Dijk is free to negotiate with foreign clubs. Spanish outlet Relevo claims that his representatives reached out to Real Madrid, informing them of Van Dijk’s interest in joining the club from the summer of 2025.
However, the offer was rejected by Real Madrid, who cited his age and current form as factors in their decision. They are looking for players more suited to their needs.
Van Dijk, 33, has been with Liverpool since January 2018 following a £75 million move from Southampton. He has been in strong form this season, making 25 appearances across all competitions as Liverpool competes on multiple fronts.
After a 2-2 draw with Manchester United, Van Dijk was asked about his contract situation, to which he responded: “Nothing.” When asked if he expected an update soon, he said: “I don’t think so, but I am calm about it, like I said months ago. We’ll see what happens in the future, but at this point, I have absolutely no update. It’s all about focusing, for me and the team, on Spurs [on Wednesday night]. It will be a tough game, but a good [Carabao Cup] semi-final.”
Arne Slot has expressed no concerns about Van Dijk’s contract situation, as the player has continued to perform well this season.
“[The] contract situation becomes a problem if players don’t perform as well as they are now,” he said last November. “At the moment, all three are in a good place and performing really, really well. There are ongoing discussions with the people Virgil says he has to talk to, and that’s not me as you know. I talk to him about other things. Virgil is completely right that he doesn’t know what his future is if he hasn’t signed the c
ontract yet.”
