A financial expert has outlined the severe consequences Manchester City could face if found guilty of multiple breaches of Premier League financial rules. The club has been accused of violating financial regulations over a nine-year period from 2009 to 2018, resulting in 115 charges by the Premier League. A hearing began in September and concluded recently, though a verdict is expected in early 2025.

City, who deny the allegations, could face an unprecedented punishment, including a substantial points deduction, a massive fine, or even relegation. Financial expert Kieran Maguire suggests the potential penalty could see City docked up to 100 points, given the scale of the alleged breaches compared to recent cases involving Everton and Nottingham Forest, which were deemed “minor.” A deduction of that magnitude would likely result in City’s relegation, marking the first time they would drop out of the Premier League since 2002.

Maguire explained that the charges fall into three categories: alleged falsification of sponsorship funds, off-the-books payments to players and staff, and non-cooperation with the Premier League’s investigation. The most serious accusation involves claims of inflating sponsorship income, which, if proven, constitutes fraud. Maguire warned that if City are found guilty, the penalties would be severe.

The charges include 54 counts of failing to provide accurate financial information, 35 counts of non-cooperation, 14 related to misreporting player and manager compensation, seven breaches of sustainability rules, and five breaches of UEFA regulations. Both parties are expected to appeal the verdict, though Maguire believes City’s grounds for appeal would be limited.
