Manchester United fans believe the entire football world owes an apology to one of their players following his exceptional performance against Arsenal.

The Red Devils faced Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in the FA Cup third round and initially took the lead through a brilliant strike from Bruno Fernandes. However, the game turned when Diogo Dalot was sent off for a second yellow card after a mistimed challenge on Mikel Merino. Shortly after, Gabriel Magalhaes equalized for Arsenal with a deflected effort.

With United reduced to 10 men for over an hour, including extra time, they put on a resilient defensive display. Goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, under criticism recently, made a crucial penalty save to deny Martin Odegaard after Kai Havertz won a controversial spot-kick.

However, the standout performer was Matthijs de Ligt. The summer signing, who has faced challenges since arriving from Bayern Munich, delivered his best performance for United. Anchoring Ruben Amorim’s back three, De Ligt was dominant, with a highlight being a remarkable clearance to deny Leandro Trossard a certain goal—an act he celebrated like scoring himself.

Fans took to social media to praise the Dutch defender. One wrote, “Matthijs de Ligt has put in one of the best CB performances I’ve ever seen… Phenomenal.” Others called him “immense,” a “monster,” and “excellent since signing this summer.”

De Ligt’s heroics helped United force the match to penalties, where they triumphed 5-3, with Joshua Zirkzee scoring the winning spot-kick after Kai Havertz missed. The performance has reshaped perceptions of De Ligt, with many fans now fully backing the

defender.
