Manchester United reportedly “in discussions” to secure one of Europe’s most highly-rated young talents, as David Ornstein shares an exciting development.
Manchester United are reportedly in discussions to secure their first signing under Ruben Amorim’s management, according to David Ornstein.
Despite a disappointing January transfer window so far, with no permanent signings and poor results, United are now targeting a highly-rated prospect. Their latest setback came in a 3-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford, where Amorim described his team as “perhaps the worst in Manchester United’s history.”
Ornstein, writing for The Athletic, revealed that the club has opened talks with Serie A side Lecce for left wing-back Patrick Dorgu. The 20-year-old, considered one of the brightest young talents in football, was monitored by several teams during the summer. Negotiations between the two clubs are reportedly progressing, with Amorim eager to bring in players suited to his tactical approach.
Dorgu, who can play on both flanks, has impressed this season with three goals in 20 Serie A appearances. He was also named Denmark’s ‘Talent of the Year’ for 2024, an award voted for by Danish players, including United striker Rasmus Hojlund.
Lecce’s sporting director Pantaleo Corvino recently described Dorgu as a “champion” with extraordinary physical ability and scoring potential, noting the widespread interest in the player. However, Corvino emphasized that Dorgu would remain with Lecce until at least the summer, though his future appears destined for a bigger stage.
It remains to be seen whether United can finalize the deal before the windo
w closes.
