When Slot took over from Jurgen Klopp in the summer, one of the key concerns was Liverpool’s midfield. Many believed the team needed a natural No. 6 to compete with Arsenal and Manchester City. Slot appeared to share this view, as Liverpool pursued Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi as their primary midfield target. However, the Spaniard rejected a move to Anfield, opting to stay in La Liga.
Instead of chasing other targets, Liverpool adapted, with Slot deploying Gravenberch at the base of midfield—a decision that has paid off significantly. The 22-year-old has seized the opportunity and established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders this season.
Despite Gravenberch’s success, some fans still believe Liverpool should sign another defensive midfielder. However, the perfect solution may already be in the squad.
During Liverpool’s Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven, with qualification already secured, Slot rested Gravenberch and other key players, giving opportunities to fringe players and youngsters. One of the standout performers was James McConnell, who played the full 90 minutes in midfield.
McConnell impressed with his defensive contributions, making more tackles than any other Liverpool player, while also recording three ball recoveries and three interceptions. He showed composure on the ball and delivered precise passes throughout the match.
His strong performance prompted Slot to rethink his immediate future. Speaking after the match, Slot confirmed that McConnell would not be sent out on loan, suggesting he could see more first-team opportunities in the coming months.
“There’s definitely one player who will not go out on loan: James McConnell. I liked him a lot today,” Slot said. “Maybe the best thing for him would be to go and play elsewhere, but he hasn’t had many minutes in the past six or seven months due to injury. He impressed me a lot today. He is very competitive in training, and I’m not surprised by his performance. He definitely dese
