Rio Ngumoha departs Chelsea heartbroken once more as Liverpool pulls off an incredible comeback.
Rio Ngumoha scored against his former club as Liverpool staged a stunning comeback to secure a spot in the U18 Premier League Cup semi-finals. The young Reds overturned a two-goal deficit in the final seven minutes, clinching a dramatic 3-2 victory over Chelsea at Cobham on Saturday.
Ngumoha, the 16-year-old winger who joined Liverpool from Chelsea in the summer and recently made his senior debut, netted the equalizer after Trey Nyoni pulled one back, setting the stage for Alvin Ayman to score the winner in stoppage time.
For 17-year-old midfielder Ayman—who joined from Wolves last year—it was a fitting way to celebrate signing his first professional contract the previous week.
Nyoni and Amara Nallo, both of whom appeared for Liverpool’s senior team in their midweek Champions League loss to PSV Eindhoven, started the match. However, Nallo’s debut was cut short after he received a red card just four minutes in.
Chelsea capitalized on their chances early on, with Ryan Kavuma-McQueen opening the scoring in the 27th minute before Genesis Antwi extended their lead in the 58th.
Liverpool remained dangerous and finally broke through in the 83rd minute when Nyoni reacted quickly to a loose ball after Joe Bradshaw’s cross wasn’t properly cleared. Four minutes later, Ngumoha weaved his way into the box and fired a precise shot inside the far post to level the score.
Ayman completed the comeback by lunging at the back post to convert Josh Sonni-Lambie’s low cross, sealing a remarkable victory for Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s side.
Liverpool U18s will be back in action on Saturday, facing Manchester United in the U18 Premier League North at Kirkby (kic
k-off 11 am).
