Ruben Amorim comments on Manchester United’s search for a striker as the transfer deadline approaches.

Ruben Amorim has emphasized that Manchester United will do everything they can to sign a forward on transfer deadline day following yet another discouraging defeat. United suffered their seventh loss at Old Trafford this season, a 2-0 setback to Crystal Palace, leaving their goal difference at a disappointing -6.

Amorim chose to play midfielder Kobbie Mainoo up front instead of regular strikers Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee, but United still failed to score, marking their ninth scoreless match of the season. Despite these struggles, United is set to allow a third forward to leave on loan, with Marcus Rashford nearing a move to Aston Villa. The club has yet to strengthen their attack, though they are considering potential moves for Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku or Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel.

Amorim clarified his decision to play Mainoo: “We chose Kobbie because of his characteristics. It’s not against Rasmus or Josh. Sometimes the team scores through certain situations, using the right attributes. Playing with two strikers doesn’t guarantee more goals.”

He acknowledged the team’s ongoing issues with scoring, saying, “It’s something we discuss constantly, and we need to improve in all areas, particularly finishing. We are trying everything to improve without repeating past mistakes and balancing the urgency of the moment. We’re aware of the challenges, but we’re doing everything we can. There’s one more day, so let’s see what happens when the window closes.”

Amorim also addressed the difficulty of making deals in the current market, stating, “This market is tough, and sometimes urgency leads to mistakes. We’re doing our best to improve, and I really want to see the team get better. I know what we need, but sometimes it’s not possible. We are trying everything.”

Regarding the potential acquisition of 19-year-old Tel, who has yet to score in 14 games this season, Amorim added, “We’ll assess players when the window closes. My focus is on improving the team as a whole. We need to win more games and keep pushing forward. This season is about small improvements, gaining momentum, and bouncing back from setbacks. But it’s clear we need to get

better.”
