Arne Slot shares insights on Liverpool’s plans for the summer transfer window.
With the January transfer window now closed, Liverpool’s decision to avoid new signings has sparked debate among fans. This comes after a summer where the club made just one major addition—Federico Chiesa from Juventus.
The lack of activity has led to frustration, especially online, with many questioning the club’s transfer strategy and Sporting Director Richard Hughes’ role. While January was seen as a chance to strengthen the squad, Liverpool instead focused on loaning out young players rather than bringing in reinforcements.
Some supporters fear this could hurt the team’s chances of competing for major trophies. Now, Arne Slot has shed light on what to expect in the next summer window.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s match against Tottenham, Slot acknowledged that several factors will shape the club’s summer business. These include player performances for the rest of the season, whether fringe players seek moves elsewhere, and the contract situations of Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk.
“It would be a bit strange if I said I was happy with the squad in the summer and winter, but then in the next window, we sign 15 new players,” Slot told the Mirror.
“But you always have to be prepared for changes. Will those not playing regularly stay and fight for their place, or will they want to leave? We need to be ready for that.”
There is growing optimism that Van Dijk will extend his contract, though Liverpool hope to secure all three key players for next season. Slot emphasized the importance of being prepared for any scenario:
“Of course, there are contract situations that you may not know about,” he said. “But Trent, Mo, and Virgil haven’t renewed yet, so we need to stay sharp and ready for whatever happens.”
The Dutchman also explained why Liverpool have been relatively quiet in the last two transfer windows, citing the need for the club’s new leadership—himself, Hughes, and others—to properly assess the squad.
“We wanted to see what we had before making big moves,” Slot said, citing Ryan Gravenberch as an example of a player who adapted to a new role after working closely with the coaching staff.
He also noted the difficulty of finding players good enough to improve Liverpool’s squad at the right price:
“The higher the level, the smaller the pool of players who can strengthen the team. At Feyenoord, there were more options than there are at Liverpool,” he explained.
“But right now, we are happy with the squad. However, in football, things change. If a player who has performed well suddenly struggles over the next three months, we may n
eed to adjust our plans.”
