Three free agents Liverpool could sign to strengthen their Premier League title bid, including a surprising choice.

Liverpool could still make a signing during Arne Slot’s debut season despite the January transfer window closing.

At 11 PM on Monday, the winter transfer window officially shut, preventing Premier League clubs from making permanent transfers or loan deals until it reopens in June.

For Liverpool fans, the window was frustrating, as the club was among the few in the league that didn’t bring in any new players. Under Slot, Liverpool has only signed two players, one of whom was immediately loaned out. However, the Dutch manager still has an opportunity to strengthen his squad before the summer window if needed.

Before the season, Premier League clubs submitted a squad list of up to 25 players. While teams can sign free agents outside of transfer windows, they can only register them if there’s an open spot in the squad. When Liverpool submitted their list in September, they included only 22 players, seemingly leaving room for potential reinforcements.

With that in mind, here are three free agents Liverpool could consider if they decide to explore the limited market:

Joel Matip

Once hailed by Jurgen Klopp as one of Liverpool’s “best-ever free transfers,” Matip remains a fan favorite. He played a crucial role in the team’s Premier League and Champions League triumphs.

However, injuries hampered his final years at Anfield, ultimately leading to his departure in the summer of 2024. Still, if Liverpool faces a defensive crisis, Matip’s experience and familiarity with the club could make him a valuable short-term solution.

Sergio Ramos

This move is highly unlikely, given Ramos’ history with Liverpool’s players and fans. But imagine the prospect of a prime Virgil van Dijk and Sergio Ramos forming a defensive partnership.

At 38, Ramos is no longer at his peak, but his recent spell at Sevilla showed he can still compete at a high level. However, given his infamous clash with Mohamed Salah in the 2018 Champions League final, it’s difficult to picture him ever being welcomed at Anfield.

Layvin Kurzawa

Ahead of the January transfer window, many Liverpool fans hoped the club would sign a left-back. Andy Robertson has struggled at times this season, while backup Kostas Tsimikas has yet to fully convince.

Despite links to players like Fulham’s Antonee Robinson and Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, Liverpool didn’t make a move. If they still want cover at left-back, former PSG defender Layvin Kurzawa could be an option. With over 150 appearances for PSG and six Premier League games for Fulham, he could provide useful depth

during the title run-in.
