Chelsea’s board has been criticized for making a £25m transfer blunder.

William Gallas has criticized Chelsea’s decision-makers for signing Robert Sanchez, claiming they should have realized the goalkeeper wasn’t “at the level” required for the club. Chelsea paid £25m to bring Sanchez from Brighton in the summer of 2023, offering him a seven-year contract. However, Sanchez’s performance has been under heavy scrutiny due to frequent mistakes leading to goals, making him the most error-prone goalkeeper in the Premier League this season. Gallas believes the blame lies with Chelsea’s board and recruitment team, rather than Sanchez himself, as they should have known he wasn’t fit to be Chelsea’s number one.

Gallas also pointed to broader issues with Chelsea’s transfer strategy, citing a lack of experience in recruitment. He criticized both Sanchez and defenders like Levi Colwill for costly mistakes, emphasizing that Colwill, despite his potential, is too young to lead Chelsea’s defense. Gallas suggested that Chelsea needs an experienced central defender, like Thiago Silva or John Terry, to help guide the younger players.
