Arsenal’s Takehiro Tomiyasu Out for the Season After Knee Surgery

Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu will miss the remainder of the season following knee surgery. The Japan international has played just six minutes in the 2024/25 campaign, having suffered a knee injury during pre-season. Though he briefly returned for a substitute appearance against Southampton in October, he was soon sidelined again.

Mikel Arteta has expressed concern over Tomiyasu’s ongoing fitness struggles. The defender recently confirmed on Instagram that he underwent another operation, sharing a photo of himself on crutches with his knee strapped. “It has been the toughest period in my career, but I won’t give up. Thank you for your support, and see you again,” he wrote. His teammates, including Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Magalhães, and William Saliba, sent their well wishes.

Arsenal’s season has been plagued by injuries, with Tomiyasu’s absence adding to the team’s defensive woes, particularly with Ben White also sidelined. His surgery comes shortly after Kai Havertz was ruled out for the rest of the campaign with a hamstring injury. Additionally, Arsenal are currently missing Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus, and Gabriel Martinelli, affecting their push to close the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Since joining Arsenal from Bologna in 2021, Tomiyasu has made 84 appearances but has also missed 82 games due to injuries. Arteta previously highlighted his importance, stating, “We really need him. He worked incredibly hard to return, but now he’s dealing with another setback. We are all behind him.”

Tomiyasu remains under contract with Arsenal until June 2026, with the club holding an option to extend his deal by another year.
