Arsenal will need to smash the Premier League’s transfer record to secure Alexander Isak from Newcastle this summer.

The 25-year-old Swedish striker has emerged as Arsenal’s top target ahead of the transfer window, with Mikel Arteta eager to strengthen his attack. Isak has been in sensational form, netting 19 goals across all competitions this season, including strikes against Arsenal in both the Premier League and Carabao Cup—showcasing his clinical ability firsthand to Arteta.

However, Newcastle have no intention of letting him go for a bargain. The current Premier League record stands at £115 million, the amount Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo in 2023, surpassing Arsenal’s £105 million signing of Declan Rice. Yet, any club hoping to sign Isak will have to exceed that figure significantly, with Newcastle reportedly demanding at least £150 million—possibly even more if they secure Champions League qualification.

Arsenal’s pursuit of Isak is further complicated by their interest in Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who has a £51 million release clause. A double swoop for both players would cost at least £200 million, potentially exhausting Arsenal’s entire summer budget.

Newcastle initially paid £63 million for Isak in 2022, and he is on track to hit 20 Premier League goals for the second consecutive season. His performances have also attracted interest from Liverpool, who are seeking an upgrade on Darwin Núñez, and Barcelona, who view him as a potential successor to the aging Robert Lewandowski.

Despite the speculation, Newcastle are determined to keep their star striker and are pushing for him to sign an improved contract, even though his current deal runs until 2028. Manager Eddie Howe has consistently reaffirmed Isak’s importance, stating last week that he wouldn’t trade him for any striker in the world.

“We have to keep our best players,” Howe emphasized. “That’s crucial for both our short-term and long-term success. As manager, my focus is on keeping this squad together and strengthening rather than losing key players. We haven’t been able to add much recently due to financial constraints, but to progress, we need to retain our top talent.”
