Vinícius Jr. has hit back at Manchester City fans after they displayed a banner aimed at him before their Champions League first-leg clash at the Etihad on February 11.
City supporters unveiled an image of Ballon d’Or winner Rodri kissing the trophy with the phrase “Stop Crying Your Heart Out,” seemingly mocking Vinícius, who had been a strong contender for the award last year. Real Madrid, unhappy with the result, had boycotted the ceremony despite winning Men’s Club of the Year and Carlo Ancelotti receiving Men’s Coach of the Year.
The banner sparked mixed reactions, with former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher calling it “absolutely ridiculous,” while Ancelotti suggested it only fueled Vinícius’ motivation. The Brazilian played a key role in Madrid’s 3-1 victory (6-3 on aggregate) at the Santiago Bernabéu, eliminating City from the competition.
Following the win, Vinícius posted a cryptic message on X: “Okay okay okay!!!!!!!” His former club, Flamengo, also joined in, tweeting: “Congrats on making it to the next round, @vinijr Stop crying your heart out!”
The winger, who previously called Flamengo the “club of his life,” came through their academy before joining Madrid in 2018. He has since embraced life in Spain but remains deeply connected to his roots.
