Darwin Nunez’s potential summer departure from Liverpool has become much clearer following a revealing statement from Atletico Madrid’s CEO.

A move to Spain’s top flight doesn’t appear to be on the cards for Liverpool’s struggling forward Darwin Nunez.

The Uruguayan has found it difficult to impress at Anfield in the 2024/25 season following a managerial change. With just six goals and five assists in 36 appearances across all competitions, his output has dropped significantly compared to the previous campaign.

As a result, many within Liverpool expect Nunez to be offloaded in the summer transfer window.

Atletico Madrid rule out interest in Nunez

While Nunez may be keeping an eye on Antony’s resurgence at Real Betis, a similar move to La Liga doesn’t seem likely. Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has firmly dismissed speculation linking the club with the Liverpool forward.

“We are not looking for a striker; our team needs reinforcements in other positions, which is what Atletico Madrid management is currently discussing,” Marin stated, as quoted by 365 Scores Arabic via Football Espana.

“Nunez is not part of the club’s transfer plans for the upcoming period, and reports of our interest are completely unfounded.”

Atletico’s priorities may lie elsewhere, but their attack has been underwhelming this season. Despite boasting La Liga’s best defensive record in 2024/25, they rank only fifth in goals scored, with no forward managing more than nine league goals.

Nunez could shine in Spain

Given the slower tempo of La Liga and Atletico’s counter-attacking style, Nunez could thrive in a system that doesn’t emphasize technical precision as much as Arne Slot’s approach at Liverpool.

However, unless Atletico Madrid reconsider or another European club shows interest, a move to Saudi Arabia appears to be the more likely outcome.
