Steven Gerrard’s decline is now fully realized following his most recent connection to a managerial role.

For many, Steven Gerrard remains one of Liverpool’s greatest-ever players, but his managerial career has been far less impressive.

After an outstanding spell at Rangers, where he guided the Scottish giants to an unbeaten league title in 2021, things have gone downhill. His success in Scotland likely convinced Aston Villa to give him his first Premier League managerial role.

However, his tenure at Villa was short-lived, lasting less than a year as poor results left the club’s board with no choice but to dismiss him.

With no opportunities arising in England, he moved to the Saudi Pro League with Al Ettifaq. Despite being briefly linked to the England job after Gareth Southgate’s departure, the role ultimately went to Thomas Tuchel.

Just two weeks ago, Gerrard was reportedly interested in signing Mo Salah—a move that would not have gone down well with Liverpool fans and his former club.

That possibility is now off the table, as the 44-year-old has been sacked by Al Ettifaq. The club currently sits in 11th place with just 22 points, trailing leaders Al Hilal by 24 points after 18 games.

Aside from his success at Rangers, Gerrard’s managerial record has been largely disappointing, and his latest link suggests his decline is complete.

According to the Daily Mail, Carlisle United—who sit bottom of League Two, eight points from safety, and at risk of dropping out of the Football League—are considering an approach for him.

It’s a bold move by the club’s American owners to boost Carlisle’s profile, but it also highlights their desperation. The real question now is just how desperate Gerrard is to return to English football.
