Darwin Núñez’s reaction to away fans after escaping a red card in Liverpool vs. Southampton says a lot.

Darwin Núñez’s response to Southampton fans after scoring Liverpool’s equalizer—and avoiding a red card—spoke volumes.

Liverpool trailed 1-0 at halftime at Anfield after a defensive mix-up between Alisson and Virgil van Dijk allowed Will Smallbone to give Ivan Jurić’s side a surprise lead.

Things nearly got worse for the Reds when Núñez escaped a red card following a VAR review of his reckless challenge on Kyle Walker-Peters. The Uruguayan faced criticism for his first-half performance but delivered the perfect response after the break.

With Liverpool at risk of suffering only their second home defeat of the season—following a 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest—Núñez had other plans. He not only scored the equalizer but also won a penalty, which Mohamed Salah converted.

After finding the net, Núñez directed a ‘shush’ gesture at the visiting Southampton supporters.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot had praised Núñez ahead of the match, highlighting his key role in assisting Harvey Elliott for the winning goal against PSG.

In his pre-match press conference, Slot remarked: “I think he was just back to being the normal Darwin, the player he was for seven or eight months before. He is so loved by the fans because he always gives everything since he’s been here.”

Slot acknowledged Núñez had experienced a dip in form after missing a key chance against Aston Villa but insisted the forward had regained his usual intensity.
