“Liverpool are in pole position to sign a Premier League centre-back.”
Liverpool and Newcastle Set for Transfer Battle Over Premier League Star Marc Guehi
Liverpool and Newcastle United are poised to go head-to-head in the race to sign one of the Premier League’s top defenders this summer.
Newcastle had previously attempted to strengthen their defense by signing Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi last summer but failed in their pursuit. Since his impressive performances for England at Euro 2024, the 23-year-old has attracted significant interest from top clubs in the league.
Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes both Liverpool and Newcastle will make moves for Guehi in the upcoming transfer window. However, he feels the Premier League leaders are currently in pole position to sign the former Chelsea defender.
“Liverpool would be a great fit for him,” Robinson told Football Insider. “Palace aren’t going to let him leave for free, so this summer is when they’ll look to cash in. With 12 months left on his deal, his price might drop slightly—but maybe not, given the likelihood of a bidding war.”
Robinson also pointed out that Newcastle were among the biggest bidders last summer, and Crystal Palace will likely demand a similar fee again. He expects Palace and Guehi to agree that now is the right time to part ways, with the final decision coming down to the defender’s preferred destination.
Liverpool are in a strong position to secure Guehi’s signature, having been relatively inactive in the last two transfer windows, which leaves them financially well-placed to invest in a marquee signing. With uncertainty surrounding Virgil van Dijk’s future, strengthening their defense has become a top priority for Arne Slot’s side.
Guehi’s contract with Palace runs until 2026, meaning the London club may have little choice but to sell him this summer to maximize his transfer value.
