Report: Liverpool begin negotiations to sign 19-goal forward as potential Darwin Nunez replacement

Liverpool have begun preparing for a future without Darwin Nunez ahead of next season.

Despite the club being in a strong position in the Premier League title race, the Uruguayan striker has struggled to find consistent form at Anfield once again. Manager Arne Slot has leaned heavily on Mohamed Salah, whose performances have been instrumental for the Reds.

Although they’re excelling domestically, Liverpool were eliminated from the Champions League in the Round of 16 by Paris Saint-Germain.

Finding a replacement for Nunez has now become a priority, as the forward continues to fall short of expectations following his big-money move. He’s recently been linked with a switch to the Saudi Pro League and is reportedly open to the idea of moving to the Middle East.

According to Anfield Watch, Liverpool have already entered discussions to sign Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. The 22-year-old French striker, who’s netted 19 goals and provided eight assists in 39 appearances this season, is attracting interest from several top clubs across Europe.

While Newcastle’s Alexander Isak remains Liverpool’s ideal signing, his high valuation makes that deal difficult. As a result, the club are now pursuing more realistic alternatives, with Ekitike emerging as a strong candidate.

Talks reportedly took place in London last week between Liverpool and the player’s representatives. However, Arsenal and Manchester United have also held discussions with Ekitike’s camp, meaning there will be stiff competition for his signature.

Ekitike is under contract with Frankfurt until 2029, so any deal is expected to come with a significant transfer fee.
