Liverpool may have the opportunity to sign a ‘sensational’ midfield powerhouse who draws comparisons to Thiago.

Liverpool might be presented with the chance to sign a midfielder they were previously linked with during his earlier Premier League stint.

Back in December 2023, Christian Falk revealed that the Reds had a serious interest in João Palhinha when he was still at Fulham, before his eventual move to Bayern Munich last summer. Now, new reports suggest his time in Germany could be cut short, with a return to the Premier League potentially on the horizon.

Palhinha could be on Liverpool’s radar again
As per CaughtOffside, Liverpool are one of several English clubs who could be offered the 29-year-old, with his representatives reportedly exploring options for a move back to the Premier League, given his limited appearances at Bayern.

The German champions may be open to parting ways with Palhinha as they look to focus on renewing Leon Goretzka’s contract. Meanwhile, the former Fulham star is said to be keen on returning to England’s top flight.

Would he strengthen Liverpool’s squad?
Should Liverpool make a move for the Portuguese international, it would draw comparisons to their 2020 signing of Thiago Alcântara, who also joined from Bayern at 29 and played a similar midfield role.

Despite limited minutes in Bavaria, Palhinha has continued to display the attributes that earned him his move there. He’s been praised by Rio Ferdinand as “sensational,” and Robbie Savage previously claimed he’d be a “fantastic fit” at Anfield.

According to FBref, Palhinha ranks among the top players in Europe’s big five leagues over the past year for tackles (top 2%), blocks (top 10%), aerial duels won (top 9%), and pass completion (top 8%).

Although he would bring quality and experience, concerns over his age—he turns 30 in July—and recent injury issues mean he might not walk straight into the starting lineup ahead of Ryan Gravenberch or Alexis Mac Allister.

Any potential deal may hinge on the transfer fee and whether Palhinha would accept a more rotational role in the squad.
