Alan Shearer delivers scathing 11-word reaction to Anthony Gordon red card after Van Dijk tackle

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has weighed in on Anthony Gordon’s controversial red card during the clash with Liverpool on Monday night.

In a highly anticipated showdown at St James’ Park, tensions ran high between Liverpool and Newcastle, as expected. With referee Simon Hooper at the center of a heated contest, the tackles came flying in, adding fuel to an already charged atmosphere.

Among the storylines surrounding the game was speculation about Alexander Isak’s future, following Liverpool’s rejected £110 million bid earlier in the month. The Swedish forward was left out of the squad, with Anthony Gordon starting up front alongside Harvey Barnes and newcomer Anthony Elanga.

However, Gordon’s night was cut short just after halftime. He received a red card for a reckless challenge on Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk. Initially shown a yellow, referee Hooper upgraded it to red after consulting VAR.

The decision enraged the home crowd, but Shearer didn’t share their outrage. Taking to social media, he made his opinion clear, writing:
“What a stupid challenge, man. It’s a red card all day.”

He wasn’t alone in his assessment. Speaking on Sky Sports, Thierry Henry backed the call:
“I said it was a red as soon as it happened. He [Gordon] lost his head in the moment—you just can’t do that.”

Jamie Carragher echoed the sentiment, saying:
“You’ve got to play with your head. Newcastle let emotions take over, and it may cost them.”

Theo Walcott, appearing on BBC’s Monday Night Club, added:
“That’s a striker’s tackle—wrong leg, no control. It’s clearly a red for me.”

Gordon is now expected to serve a three-match suspension, ruling him out of games against Leeds, Wolves, and Bournemouth. He will be eligible to return against Arsenal on September 28.
