Expert reveals whether Alexander Isak can now cancel his Newcastle contract following a private ‘meeting’.

A former financial adviser to Manchester City has shed light on Alexander Isak’s current situation regarding the possibility of ending his contract with Newcastle United, following a private meeting about his future.

While Liverpool edged out Newcastle 3-2 in a dramatic game on Monday, much of the attention remained on Isak, who is still unavailable for selection after reportedly going on strike.

Manager Eddie Howe, questioned before and after the game, said he had no knowledge of a recent meeting between Isak and Newcastle co-owner Jamie Reuben. It’s believed Reuben, along with representatives from PIF, met with Isak at his home in an effort to persuade him to stay and return to the squad.

Financial expert Stefan Borson has addressed speculation that Isak could try to invoke FIFA’s Article 17 to break his contract. This rule can allow a player to terminate a contract under specific conditions. However, Borson said that Isak cannot currently end his deal this way due to existing Premier League clauses.

“There’s nothing new in the recent reports,” Borson told Football Insider. “Isak appears to feel let down by non-contractual assurances, but from a legal standpoint, those hold little weight. I don’t buy into claims he’s preparing to walk out or rely on Article 17.”

Borson added that several factors would prevent Article 17 from being applicable this summer — especially since the situation doesn’t involve an international transfer. Additionally, Premier League contracts require disputes to be handled under league rules. FIFA regulations also prevent players from unilaterally ending contracts after the season has started.

Isak, who joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022, is under contract until 2028. He’s scored 62 goals in 109 appearances but has yet to play this season.
