Liverpool Encouraged in Guehi Pursuit as Defender Makes Preference Clear Amid Ongoing Talks

Liverpool appear to have received a boost in their bid to sign Marc Guehi during the final week of the summer transfer window. Initial discussions have taken place between Anfield officials and Crystal Palace regarding the 25-year-old centre-back, even as Manchester City have reportedly shown late interest in the Eagles captain.

However, The Times journalist Paul Joyce reports that Guehi would only consider a move to Liverpool if he leaves Selhurst Park before the window closes next Monday. This stance has been echoed by two other reliable sources in recent hours.

Guehi Prioritises Liverpool Move

On Tuesday morning, Fabrizio Romano posted an update on X, stating: “Despite reports of interest from Manchester City and other clubs, Marc Guehi’s situation remains unchanged: Liverpool is his preferred destination. Talks are still ongoing to make the move happen before the window closes. If not, Liverpool will return for him in 2026.”

Meanwhile, in The Athletic’s latest Transfer DealSheet, David Ornstein also confirmed that Anfield is Guehi’s club of choice should he depart this summer. Palace, however, are reluctant to let their captain leave for free next year, especially as the defender has shown no intent to extend his contract, now in its final 12 months.

There are suggestions that a deal could become possible if Palace lower their valuation, with journalist Miguel Delaney previously reporting an asking price of £45 million. Liverpool, however, are believed to be unwilling to go above £35 million – a £10 million gap that would require compromise from at least one party.

Still Time for a Deal to Be Done

Following a narrow win over Newcastle that saw Ibrahima Konaté come under scrutiny, some Liverpool supporters are urging the club to act swiftly on Guehi. Still, sporting director Richard Hughes and FSG are unlikely to make decisions based solely on a single performance.

Interestingly, Konaté’s contract situation is not unlike Guehi’s, adding another layer of intrigue to Liverpool’s interest in the Palace star.

While only six days remain in the window, there’s still a realistic chance for Liverpool to make their move – especially if Palace’s European hopes are dashed in Thursday’s Conference League play-off second leg against Fredrikstad. Guehi’s desire to join the Reds could strengthen further if Palace’s season takes an early blow, giving Liverpool a potential opening to strike before the deadline.
