Arsenal ‘consider two former players’ in their search for a new sporting director to succeed Edu.

Arsenal are actively searching for a new sporting director following the news that Edu will be leaving the club, creating a significant vacancy. Per Mertesacker, the club’s current academy manager, is among the potential candidates for the role, along with Tomas Rosicky, the sporting director of Sparta Prague.

Edu’s departure, which was announced earlier this week, marks the end of his successful tenure at Arsenal. During his time as sporting director, Edu played a key role in strengthening the team alongside Mikel Arteta, contributing to the club’s resurgence as serious contenders for titles. He also helped orchestrate high-profile transfers, including the club-record signing of Declan Rice. Edu is set to take on a new role leading Evangelos Marinakis’ group of clubs, which includes Nottingham Forest.

In the interim, Jason Ayto has taken over the responsibilities as Arsenal continues their search for Edu’s permanent successor. While the club is considering former players, they are also open to other options and are not exclusively focused on hiring someone with past playing experience.

Arsenal’s co-chairman, Josh Kroenke, expressed confidence in the club’s direction, thanking Edu for his significant contributions and emphasizing that change is part of the club’s evolution.
