David Coote has been restricted from officiating matches involving two English clubs.

Premier League referee David Coote has been suspended from officiating games involving two English football league clubs, it has emerged.

On Monday, a video surfaced that appeared to show Coote making offensive remarks about Liverpool and manager Jurgen Klopp. In the video, a man resembling Coote is seen making derogatory comments, calling Klopp a “German c***” and “fing arrogant,” while describing Liverpool as “s” in reference to a recent game at Anfield where he served as the fourth official.

The man in the video also mentioned Klopp confronting him during a past match between Liverpool and Burnley at Anfield but noted that former Liverpool player James Milner was “alright.”

In a second shared video, the man said, “Just to be clear, that f***ing last video cannot go anywhere, seriously.” Another person in the video added, “He’s a Premier League referee, let’s not ruin his career.”

The PGMOL launched an investigation, confirming that Coote, who officiated Liverpool’s match against Aston Villa on Saturday, had been immediately suspended while the investigation proceeds.

Initially, The Mirror reported that Coote “vehemently denied any inappropriate conduct” and insisted to referee chiefs that the video was not real. However, the outlet later updated its report, stating that Coote now accepts the video is authentic but does not recall the discussion, which he claims took place several years ago.

Coote, who has been officiating in the Premier League since 2018, is among the league’s most experienced referees. The 42-year-old, who presided over the 2023 Carabao Cup final between Manchester United and Newcastle, is a Notts County supporter from Nottingham, which bars him from officiating games involving Notts County or local rivals Nottingham Forest due to conflicts of interest.
