Frank Lampard is the leading candidate to replace Mark Robins as Coventry City’s manager.

Coventry City recently parted ways with long-serving manager Mark Robins following a sluggish start to the season, which has left them 17th in the Championship standings.

Frank Lampard, a former England midfielder, is now the favorite to step in at the CBS Arena. He has been without a managerial position since his stint as interim manager at Chelsea in 2023, where he took over following Graham Potter’s dismissal. Before that, Lampard managed Everton, leaving in January last year with the club in 19th place after recording 24 losses, 12 wins, and eight draws in 44 games. His win rate of 27.91% ranked him as Everton’s second-worst manager.

Lampard’s earlier tenure at Chelsea, from July 2019 to January 2021, was more promising. Under his leadership, Chelsea scored 67 goals in 38 games and finished fourth in the Premier League, reaching the FA Cup final but losing to Arsenal. However, a string of poor results led to his dismissal after 18 months, though then-owner Roman Abramovich affirmed Lampard’s status as a club icon.

Lampard’s managerial journey began at Derby in the 2018/19 season, where he led the team to the Championship play-offs, missing out on promotion but impressing Chelsea enough to hire him the following summer.

While there were recent speculations about Lampard potentially returning to West Ham, Coventry now appears to be his next opportunity. His potential appointment follows criticism from fans and figures like former EFL boss Neil Warnock, who labeled the decision to sack Robins as “silly” and advised Coventry to “be careful what they wished for.” Robins, who had been with Coventry for over seven years, was the third-longest-serving manager in English football before his exit. Ironically, the Coventry board’s decision came after a home defeat to Lampard’s former team, Derby County.
