Jurgen Klopp’s assistant shares his thoughts on what he “anticipated” at Liverpool in his assessment of Arne Slot.

Former Liverpool assistant Vitor Matos, who worked as a development coach under Jurgen Klopp from 2019 to 2024 and now collaborates with Pep Lijnders at Red Bull Salzburg, has shared his perspective on the changes at Anfield since Klopp’s departure.

Speaking to O Jogo (via Sport Witness), Matos reflected on the legacy left behind: “The greatest satisfaction we have is knowing we left the club with the capacity and sustainability to compete for titles, a winning culture, and a clear identity that resonates with the fans. This is our greatest achievement.”

He emphasized Klopp’s focus on competitiveness: “Nothing sustains success like winning, and Jurgen’s primary goal was to make the team competitive against any opponent. Consistency naturally followed.”

Arne Slot, Klopp’s successor, has made a strong start, winning 15 of his first 17 matches. Matos expressed no surprise at Liverpool’s continued progress under the new leadership: “This impact was anticipated. The transition was carefully planned during the season to ensure it was as seamless as possible.”

Matos highlighted how the team’s focus remained intact during the changeover: “While everyone experienced the moment differently, the daily routines of training and games stayed consistent. Over time, we barely noticed the final months and days at the club.”

Reflecting on Liverpool’s current success, Matos said: “It’s great to see Liverpool leading the Premier League and Champions League. The players and the people supporting them deserve this. Finding a coach capable of leading Liverpool is no small task, and based on the results, it’s hard to imagine a better start.”

He also acknowledged Slot’s influence: “Arne has retained certain aspects of the team’s philosophy, which has helped, but he’s also introduced differences based on his own values and beliefs. The hunger for success in this team is clear, and it’s fantastic to watch.”
